Baden-Württemberg is the southwesternmost federal state of the Federal Republic of Germany and covers an area of 35,752 sq km. It borders the federal states of Rheinland-Pfalz, Hessen and Bayern, as well as Switzerland to the south and France to the west; the Rhine forms the natural national border with both countries for the most part. A prominent border crossing is the Europabrücke between Strasbourg and Kehl. 10.7 million people live in Baden-Württemberg, around 600,000 of them in the state capital Stuttgart. The state is one of the economically strongest federal states and is considered an important centre of the German automotive industry (including Daimler AG, Porsche, Robert Bosch) - the automobile was invented here -, as well as a significant location for the machine engineering industry and an outstanding research hub. Well-known companies from the textile industry such as Hugo Boss, Trigema and Steiff are also based here. Besides Stuttgart, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Freiburg, Ulm, Heidelberg and Heilbronn are the largest cities. Baden-Württemberg is regarded as a state with a high quality of life and great leisure value, unemployment is low, and the region offers many sights and varied landscapes. These include, for example, Lake Constance, the Schwarzwald - one of the largest low mountain ranges in Germany -, the Schwäbische Alb, where the Danube also has its source, or the Kaiserstuhl - a high, compact low mountain range on the edge of the Upper Rhine plain -, which is considered climatically the warmest region in Germany. Baden-Württemberg has many romantic and partly well-preserved castles, fortresses and old towns, especially along the Neckar, worth mentioning here is the world-famous Heidelberger Schloss. Heidelberg is also home to the oldest university in Germany, other internationally highly regarded university towns are Tübingen, Freiburg, Stuttgart, Ulm, Mannheim, Konstanz and Karlsruhe. Also of folkloric and touristic memorable value are the world-famous casino in the spa town of Baden-Baden, the Europa-Freizeitpark in Rast, the Alemannic Fasnacht, Bollenhüte, cherry cakes and cuckoo clocks from the Schwarzwald, as well as the inability of the people of Baden-Württemberg to speak proper High German - a shortcoming they sometimes flirt with themselves. Never mind - Baden-Württemberg is overflowing with other qualities.
