Entrambe vengono menzionate per la prima volta nell'817 in un documento di Ludovico il Pio, ma mentre Villingen nel 1283 viene assegnata ai Fürstenberger e appartiene all'Austria dal 1326 al 1805, Schwenningen viene assegnata nel 1444 all'Oberamt Tuttlingen, da cui passa nel 1842 all'Oberamt Rottweil. Villingen possiede ancora un centro storico medievale ampiamente intatto con diverse attrazioni come il duomo protogotico, il municipio tardogotico e resti delle fortificazioni cittadine come la Bickentor, la Riettor o la Pulvertürmle.
