The easternmost federal state with the state capital has about 4.2 million inhabitants and, like Bavaria and Thuringia, is a Free State. It borders the Czech Republic to the south and Poland to the east, as well as the German states of Bavaria, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Brandenburg. The state, which belongs to the five new federal states, was created in the course of German reunification in 1990. It can be divided into the southwestern low mountain range, the hilly country in the south and the flat country near Leipzig. But it is so often said: "The Saxons are not really Saxons". What does that mean? In the 11th-13th century, besides Franconia, Hesse and Bavaria, Thuringians in particular came to the area, from which today's Saxon people actually originated. So if you want to take it very seriously, then the Saxons are actually Thuringians.

Wer Sachsen besucht, kommt nicht drum rum die drei großen Metropolen zu besichtigen: Dresden, Leipzig und Chemnitz. Alle drei Städte glänzen mit einem breiten Angebot an Kunst, Kultur und imposanten Sehenswürdigkeiten. Wenn man sich die Frauenkirche in Dresden anschaut, kann man sich kaum vorstellen, dass diese 1945 aufgrund der Bombenangriffe komplett ausgebrannt war. Sie wurde mit Hilfe von Spenden wieder errichtet und heute können dort sogar Konzerte gespielt werden. Für jeden Liebhaber von Opern ist die Semperoper ein Muss, und selbst wenn man kein Freund von Opern ist, das Gebäude selbst beeindruckt. In Leipzig wird durch das jährliche Bachfest an Johann Sebastian Bach erinnert, welcher in der Stadt seine wichtigsten Werke schrieb. Modern, dynamisch und offen – dadurch definiert sich die Stadt Chemnitz. Das zeigt sich vor allem im Sport und der Kunst, denn die Stadt hat so einige namhafte Athleten und Künstler hervorgebracht: Allen voran der Fußballstar Michael Ballack und die Eiskunstläuferin Katarina Witt, sowie der Schauspieler Matthias Schweighöfer und der Schriftsteller Stafan Heym, alle haben in der modernen Stadt ihre Heimat. If you take a look at the Frauenkirche in Dresden, you can hardly imagine that it was completely burnt out in 1945 due to the bombing raids. It was rebuilt with the help of donations and today concerts can even be played there. The Semperoper Opera House is a must for every opera lover, and even if you are not a friend of opera, the building itself is impressive. In Leipzig, the annual Bach Festival commemorates Johann Sebastian Bach, who wrote his most important works in the city. Modern, dynamic and open - this is how the city of Chemnitz defines itself. This can be seen above all in sport and art, because the city has produced a number of renowned athletes and artists: above all the football star Michael Ballack and the figure skater Katarina Witt, as well as the actor Matthias Schweighöfer and the writer Stafan Heym, all have their home in the modern city.
