The club FKK Atlanta is located in Hanau-Lamboy.
They are the city's most important sons: Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, the two world-famous editors of the Grimm fairy tales. The two literary scholars, however, worked mainly in Kassel, which in no way diminishes Hanau's pride in its two sons. Aside from the Brothers Grimm, they are not the only reason for the city to look back proudly on its past.
Hanau's old town was largely destroyed in World War II. In 1143, the moated castle of Hanau is first mentioned, today's largely demolished city palace, which was the residence of the Counts of Hanau. In 1303, King Albrecht I granted the settlement of Hanau market and town rights. From 1597 onwards, Count Philipp Ludwig II brought Calvinist refugees from France and the Spanish Netherlands as well as numerous Jews to Hanau; as a result, the city experienced an economic boom. The Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus, the town's old town hall, had already been built earlier in 1538. From 1700 to 1725, the largest surviving showpiece building of Hanau was built in the west of the city: the Baroque Schloss Philippsruhe, in whose palace park the Brüder-Grimm-Märchenfestspiele take place every year from May to July/August. Also worth seeing is the historic spa complex Wilhelmsbad with the oldest fixed carousel in the world.
The Deutsche Märchenstraße, the Deutsche Limesstraße and the Deutsche Fachwerkstraße all run through Hanau. The city is the starting point for numerous leisure routes in the Rhine-Main-Kinzig area. The Main serves as an important waterway, leading via the Main-Donau-Kanal to the Danube; the Hanauer Hafen is thus a significant cargo hub along this route. Hanau's cityscape has changed radically since the destruction of the war. The city, where the Deutscher Turner-Bund was founded in 1848, is today a solidly established industrial city in the Frankfurt metropolitan area and home to businesses of major companies such as Heraeus, Evonik Industries, Dunlop, Vacuumschmelze and Umicore.
Among Hanau's well-known sons and daughters are Philipp II., Karl August Friedrich, Maria von Hessen-Kassel, Friedrich Grimm, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, Ludwig Emil Grimm, Wilhelm Carl Heraeus, Paul Hindemith, Jürgen Grasmück, Harald Schmid, Thomas Berthold, Renate Schmidt, Daniela Schadt, Luca Zamperoni, Rudi Völler and Dominic Raacke.
