Bonn:
Together with Andernach (Antunnacum), Koblenz (Confluentes), Köln (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium), Mainz (Mogontiacum), Neuss (Novaesium), Speyer (Noviomagus), Trier (Augusta Treverorum), Worms (Borbetomagus) and Xanten (Colonia Ulpia Traiana), Bonn is one of the sites that Roman troops brought under their control on the left bank of the Rhine during the time of Emperors Augustus and Tiberius, making it one of the oldest cities in Germany. Despite its rich history, the city has remained comparatively compact in terms of its geographical extent to this day.
The city's landmarks are the Bonner Münster, built in the 11th century, and the Historic Rococo Rathaus (1737-38) in the charming city centre, in whose alleys the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven can also be visited. Significant palace complexes in the city centre are the Poppelsdorfer Schloss with its Hofgarten, as well as the Kurfürstliches Schloss, which today houses the University of Bonn.
Bonn is home to numerous museums of great importance, including the Museumsmeile with, among others, the Bundeskunsthalle, the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum; furthermore the Frauenmuseum, the Ägyptisches Museum, and also the Kanzlerbungalow, the Palais Schaumburg, first official seat of the Bundeskanzleramt from 1949 to 1976, as well as the Villa Hammerschmidt, official residence of the Bundespräsident of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland from 1950-1994; in addition the Beethoven-Haus, the August-Macke-Haus, the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Haus and the Schumannhaus.
In competition with Frankfurt am Main, Bonn was chosen in 1949, with Konrad Adenauer's influence, as the capital of the young Bundesrepublik Deutschland, and from then on shaped the course of the Bonner Republik until German reunification in 1990.
Bonn has a distinctly tranquil location on the Rhine with a magnificent view of the Siebengebirge on the right bank. On the left-bank riverside promenade, one can stroll for many kilometres, far out beyond the not-too-distant border of Rheinland-Pfalz. South of the city, tourist excursion destinations follow one another in close succession, such as Bad Godesberg, Königswinter, Drachenfels, Petersberg, Bad Honnef, Remagen, Unkel, Sinzig, Oberwinter, Bad Breisig, Linz, Brohl, Bad Hönningen and Andernach.
Bonn is, among other things, home to Deutsche Telekom, DHL, Postbank, Tank & Rast, Verpoorten, Haribo, Solarworld as well as IVG Immobilien AG.
The Bonner Eros-Center on Immenburgstraße, known well beyond the region, a massive multi-storey old building with numerous winding corridors, is located west of the main train station.
Well-known sons and daughters of Bonn include Salomon Oppenheim junior, Ludwig van Beethoven, Karl Simrock, Hans Riegel, Hermann-Josef Abs, Helmut Horten, Heide Simonis, Natalie Horler, Roger Willemsen, Johannes B. Kerner, Bushido, Norman Rentrop, Sonja Zietlow, Konstanze Klosterhalfen and Silke Bodenbender.
Euskirchen:
Euskirchen is a district town in the Zülpicher Börde on the northern edge of the Eifel, which has held town rights since 1302. Euskirchen is about 30 km from Bonn and can be reached via the Autobahnen A1 and A61 - from Bonn via the Bundesstraßen B56 and B266 - as well as via the Euskirchen train station.
