The Club Venus is located in Offenburg to the west of the town centre.
Like Freiburg im Breisgau, about 50 kilometres further south, and Baden-Baden, at a similar distance to the north, Offenburg lies close to the Rhine Rift Valley of the Upper Rhine Plain and, like these neighbouring towns, is considered a gateway to the Black Forest. The town historically belonged to the Diocese of Strasbourg and was already the seat of a deanery in 774. Today's Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche, Offenburg's main Catholic church, is based on the first parish of the 12th century.
In 1240 Offenburg was granted the title of Free Imperial City. The town, which from 1500 lay within the Swabian Imperial Circle, was assigned to the state of Baden in 1803 and, following the dissolution of the Diocese of Strasbourg in the same year, initially came under the Diocese of Konstanz before finally joining the newly founded Archdiocese of Freiburg in 1827. Offenburg played a prominent role in the democratic movement of the Revolution of 1848/49.
As with most towns in the region, the townscape is predominantly Baroque in character. The old town lies within the catchment area of Hauptstraße, Fischmarkt and Lange Straße and is home to the Historic Town Hall, the former Königshof, the Salzhaus, the historic Gasthaus Salmen and the Ritterhaus.
Offenburg is easily reached via the A5 motorway and the ICE railway station. The town also has its own airfield, though since 1996 it has only been usable as a special-use airfield by prior registration. It is mainly used by the Burda company.
A number of well-known companies are based in Offenburg, including the Burda publishing house, Hiwin, Vivil, tesa, Markant, Printus, Edeka Südwest and E.optimum AG.
Well-known people born in Offenburg include Hanns Martin Schleyer, Aenne Burda, Franz Burda junior and Jürgen Todenhöfer.
