Bonn:
Bonn, together with Andernach (Antunnacum), Koblenz (Confluentes), Köln (Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium), Mainz (Mogontiacum), Neuss (Novaesium), Speyer (Noviomagus), Trier (Augusta Treverorum), Worms (Borbetomagus) and Xanten (Colonia Ulpia Traiana), is one of the sites that Roman troops brought under their control on the left bank of the Rhine during the reigns of Emperors Augustus and Tiberius, and thus counts among the oldest cities in Germany. Despite its rich history, the city has to this day remained relatively compact in terms of its geographical extent.
Landmarks of the city are the Bonner Münster, built in the 11th century, and the Historical Rococo Rathaus (1737-38) in the pretty inner-city core, in whose lanes the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven can also be visited. Important palace complexes in the city centre are the Poppelsdorfer Schloss with the Hofgarten as well as the Kurfürstliches Schloss, which today houses the Universität Bonn.
Bonn is home to numerous museums of great importance, including the Museumsmeile, among them the Bundeskunsthalle, the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum; furthermore the Frauenmuseum, the Ägyptisches Museum and also the Kanzlerbungalow, the Palais Schaumburg, which from 1949 to 1976 was the first official seat of the Bundeskanzleramt, as well as the Villa Hammerschmidt, official seat and residence of the Bundespräsident of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland from 1950-1994; in addition the Beethoven-Haus, the August-Macke-Haus, the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Haus and the Schumannhaus.
In competition with Frankfurt am Main, Bonn was chosen in 1949, with Konrad Adenauer's influence, as the capital of the young Bundesrepublik Deutschland and from then on shaped the fortunes of the Bonner Republik until German reunification in 1990.
Bonn has a thoroughly tranquil setting on the Rhine with a splendid view of the Siebengebirge on the right bank. On the left-bank riverside promenade you can stroll for many kilometres, well beyond the not-too-distant border with Rheinland-Pfalz. South of the city, tourist destinations follow one another in close succession, such as Bad Godesberg, Königswinter, Drachenfels, Petersberg, Bad Honnef, Remagen, Unkel, Sinzig, Oberwinter, Bad Breisig, Linz, Brohl, Bad Hönningen and Andernach.
Bonn is, among other things, the headquarters of Deutsche Telekom, DHL, Postbank, Tank & Rast, Verpoorten, Haribo, Solarworld as well as IVG Immobilien AG.
The well-known Bonner Eros-Center on Immenburgstraße, a hulking multi-storey old building with numerous interlinked corridors, is located west of the main train station.
Well-known sons and daughters of Bonn include Salomon Oppenheim junior, Ludwig van Beethoven, Karl Simrock, Hans Riegel, Hermann-Josef Abs, Helmut Horten, Heide Simonis, Natalie Horler, Roger Willemsen, Johannes B. Kerner, Bushido, Norman Rentrop, Sonja Zietlow, Konstanze Klosterhalfen and Silke Bodenbender.
Rheinbach:
Rheinbach has belonged to the Abtei Prüm since ancient times and was developed into a town around 1298 by the Ritter von Rheinbach, who originally served the abbey. From 1343 to 1789 Rheinbach was part of the Erzstift Köln; after the Napoleonic upheavals it passed to Prussia in 1815 and initially became part of the Großherzogtum Niederrhein, then, until 1945, part of the Rheinprovinz. Rheinbach is located about 25 km southwest of Bonn.
