The Club Imperia is located in Konstanz-Wollmatingen at the airfield.
At the point where the Rhein flows out of the upper part of the Bodensee lies Konstanz, an ancient Celtic settlement later named after the Roman emperor Constantius II. The city centre lies on the southern side of the municipal boundary and, geographically speaking, actually already belongs to the Swiss hinterland. The Imperia, the large statue erected in 1993 in the harbour of Konstanz, 9 metres tall and weighing 18 tonnes, has since become a modern landmark of the city and is meant to commemorate the Council of Konstanz (1414-1418), during which Konstanz attained extraordinary significance. In her form as a revolving, voluptuous courtesan wearing a fool's cap, she also expresses an unabashedly mischievous critique of the power instincts of that era.
From the Imperia, pedestrians can stroll along the lakeshore over into Switzerland in just a few minutes — there is no manned border post along the promenade. Within a few steps one can also reach, from the harbour with its imposing former Council building, the immediately adjoining, cosy old town, where you can spend hours admiring sights such as the Schnetztor, the Rathaus or the Münster from the city's long history.
Thanks to its exposed location on an old transalpine trade route, and not least because of its favourable Bodensee climate, Konstanz has grown into a place of exceptionally high quality of life. The northern shore of the Bodensee can be reached by car ferry from Konstanz-Staad to the enchanting Meersburg in twenty minutes; from there, in clear weather, you can enjoy a beautiful distant view of the silhouette of the Swiss Alps. Pedestrian ferries also run directly from the city harbour to Friedrichshafen and Bregenz.
