Sure, the city is inextricably linked with the name of one of Germany's most renowned car brands, but Ingolstadt is about more than just Audi. The city where Franz Beckenbauer went to boarding school and where Horst Seehofer was born was already mentioned as a royal court in a charter of Charlemagne. For centuries it was a mighty fortress city and Bavarian duchy. The first Bavarian university was founded here in 1472, though it was relocated to Landshut in 1800 and finally to Munich in 1826, where today, as the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, it is Germany's largest university by student numbers. Ingolstadt, on the other hand, did not become home to a university again until 1989.

The largely preserved old town bears witness to a long history and invites exploration. The city's landmark is the Kreuztor, part of the western fortification ring dating from the 14th century, which provides access to the city centre and the nearby Liebfrauenmünster. From here it's a great spot to stroll through the lanes of the old town all the way to the Neues Schloss on the eastern side of the city centre. Further east you then reach Ingolstadt Village, the well-known designer outlet.

Ingolstadt's economic development after the war is a genuine success story. In 1949, the newly re-founded Auto Union GmbH — descendant of the Audi Automobilwerke GmbH Zwickau, founded in 1910 by August Horch — settled in the city, which is conveniently located on the A9 halfway between Munich and Nuremberg. The company was initially taken over by Daimler in majority in 1958, and finally by Volkswagen in 1968. The name Audi is the Latin imperative singular of "to listen", a playful reference to the founder's name (Horch). Today Audi stands for high-quality German car and motorcycle manufacturing, whose brands now also include Lamborghini and Ducati.

In the wake of this economic success, a large number of companies from the automotive supply and oil-processing sectors have settled in Ingolstadt; the city is also home to Media-Saturn-Holding, Europe's largest chain of electronics retail stores. Ingolstadt is today one of the fastest-growing municipal areas in Germany and boasts the lowest unemployment rate among Germany's major cities. Despite this robust purchasing power, price levels for erotic services in the Ingolstadt region remain moderate, especially compared with the state capital Munich, which — alongside Augsburg — makes Ingolstadt a popular alternative destination in this sector for Munich locals plagued by high-price tariffs.
