The club FKK Mocilnik is located west of the district of Mirke in a wooded area.
Vrhnika was known in antiquity as Nauportus, the German name is Oberlaibach. The municipality lies approximately 20 kilometres south of the country's capital Ljubljana at an altitude of 293 metres on the edge of the Ljubljana Marsh in the source area of the Ljubljanica. Today the municipality consists of 25 villages and hamlets and lies on an old trade route between Trieste and Vienna as well as between Rijeka and Klagenfurt. Until the age of industrialisation, Vrhnika was regarded as a prosperous market town, after which the place lost its importance because it was not connected to the network when the railway lines were built. Today Vrhnika is regarded as a satellite town of Ljubljana and can be reached easily from there by car, bus, and via the railway stations of Borovnica, Verd and Logatec. The international railway line Vienna - Trieste runs through the town of Borovnica.
A significant part of the population is engaged in agriculture or employed in the leather and wood processing industry. The area forms the flattest transition from the Ljubljana Basin over the wooded karst heights of Inner Carniola to the Mediterranean coast, and with the karst spring of the Ljubljanica, the Pekel Gorge with its mighty waterfalls and cascades, and the ski areas Zaplana, Ulovka and Zabocevo, it certainly has attractive recreational areas to offer. In addition, national and international hiking trails run through the district. Within the municipality one finds sports parks in several villages as well as a well-kept open-air pool and a fitness centre in Vrhnika. Also worth seeing is Bistra Castle, today home to the Technical Museum of Slovenia.
Vrhnika was raised to the status of a town in 1955.
