The Club Wellcum near Villach is located northwest of Arnoldstein on the left bank of the Gailitz shortly before it flows into the Gail.
In Roman times there was already a settlement called Santicum in what is now Villach, the second-largest city in Carinthia after Klagenfurt; later Slavs settled here. From 740 AD Villach came under Bavarian rule, and from 1007 to 1759 the town was the property of the Bishopric of Bamberg. Villach only came into Austrian possession in 1759, when Empress Maria Theresia bought up all Bamberg's holdings in Carinthia for Austria. Today Villach maintains a town twinning with the city of Bamberg.
The tranquil town at the confluence of the Gail and Drau rivers has a lovely old town, where between Hauptplatz, Pranger and Lederergasse it's a pleasure to stroll through the quarter and soak up the already noticeably Mediterranean flair of the town. With its location at the tripoint of Austria, Italy and Slovenia, Villach has long been shaped by an appealing cultural diversity and is accordingly also an important transport hub in the Alpine-Adriatic region, particularly for rail traffic.
Villach is an especially charming destination for tourism. The town is nestled in the magnificent Carinthian mountain landscape with views of the Dobratsch nature park, the Karawanken and the Carnic Alps; at the same time, thanks to its location in the Klagenfurt basin, it is surrounded by numerous idyllic lakes such as Lake Ossiach, Lake Faak and Lake Wörth. The region is equally appealing as a paradise for hiking, leisure and wellness as well as a ski area, both in summer and in winter.
