Reiskirchen, at the motorway triangle of the same name A5/A480, is a large municipality within the catchment area of Gießen. It lies in the immediate western foreland of the Vogelsberg volcanic region, the largest contiguous basalt massif in Europe, which rises up to 773m above sea level at its peak, the Taufstein. In earlier centuries the settlement belonged to the dominion of the Freiherrliche family von Buseck, and from 1806 it was part of the newly founded Großherzogtum Hessen. Today's municipal area emerged from the territorial reform in Hessen of 1970, in which the municipalities of Reiskirchen, Hattenrod, Saasen and Winnerod merged into the large municipality of Reiskirchen. By 1977 the municipalities of Burkhardsfelden, Bersrod, Ettingshausen and Lindenstruth were also added to today's administrative area.
