The Club Schlaraffenland is located on the southern edge of Wenden-Ottfingen.
Wenden lies in the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park at 411 m above sea level. The municipality belongs to the Kreis Olpe and is the southernmost municipality in the Sauerland. The state border of Rheinland-Pfalz is less than three kilometres away, and it is about four kilometres to the BAB-Kreuz Olpe-Süd motorway junction. The nearest railway stations are in Kreuztal, ten kilometres to the east, and at a similar distance in Olpe, north of Wenden.
Some farmsteads in the area of what is now Wenden are first mentioned in documents in the 12th century; at that time they belonged to the Stift auf dem Berge in Herford. The parish church of St. Severinus, which was built during this period, was originally a branch church of Olpe in the Amt Waldenburg under the rule of the Archbishops of Cologne. In 1750-52 today's hall church was built over the old church building.
Wenden has always been shaped by its location on the border between Siegerland and Sauerland, and between Nassau-Siegen and the Duchy of Westfalen, to which it belonged until 1802. From 1802-1816 Wenden fell under Hessen-Darmstadt, and afterwards came under Prussian rule. Since 1817 Wenden has belonged to the Kreis Olpe. In this region there once also ran an old Saxon-Frankish tribal and language border between the Low German and High German language areas.
Wenden sees itself in particular as part of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park, with designated nature reserves and natural monuments within the municipal area, and thus primarily as an attractive destination for day trips and holidays. Destinations in the region include the Biggetalsperre, Freudenstadt, the Attendorn stalactite cave, the Karl-May-Spiele in Elspe, the Südsauerlandmuseum Attendorn, the Ruhr-Sieg cycle path, as well as the Wendener Hütte, one of the oldest and still excellently preserved charcoal blast furnace facilities in the German-speaking region, which points to the mining activities in the Wenden catchment area dating back to the Middle Ages.
Wenden was traditionally shaped by forestry and woodland management up until after World War II; in more recent times a handful of medium-sized commercial businesses can also be found there.
