The club FKK Prestige is located in Neunkirchen, southwest of the town centre on a ridge of hills.
On 10 September 1987 the moment had come: Erich Honecker was finally allowed to officially, in statesmanlike fashion, see his birthplace again. The long-serving head of state of the GDR was probably the most famous son of Neunkirchen. Others, however, have left their mark on what is today the second-largest city in Saarland.
Since the age of industrialisation, the city has been closely linked with the mining and steel industry. Even earlier, in 1593, the Neunkircher Eisenwerk was built in the Bliestal, and for the year 1770 Goethe describes in Dichtung und Wahrheit the by-then well-developed ironworks of the town, but also still the picturesque setting of the place. At that time Neunkirchen was still a village. In 1806 the mining and industrial family Stumm took over the ironworks; the company subsequently rose to become a market leader in the iron-producing industry.
In 1968 the last coal mine in Neunkirchen closed, followed by the ironworks in 1982. The decline of heavy industry hit Neunkirchen hard. The townscape is still dominated today by massive industrial monuments from the old era. On part of the former works site now stands the Saarpark-Center shopping mall.
Neunkirchen can be reached by car via the A8 and has its own main railway station. In the sector south of the Blies, shaped by steep hills and forest landscape, the city runs a zoo. With the Musicalprojekt Neunkirchen, the city has been trying since 2012 to create a new unique selling point in the artistic field.
