That the former Saarland Minister-President Oskar Lafontaine, born in nearby Saarlautern (Saarlouis), bears a French surname is hardly surprising, since the once Celtic settlement of Saarbrücken was annexed to France in 1797 under Napoleon; after World War I, the Saarland was placed under the administration of the League of Nations, and after World War II the region came under French military rule. Only on 01.01.1957, after a long and eventful history, was the Saarland incorporated into the Federal Republic following a referendum. Nowhere in Germany is French culture as close and present as in Saarbrücken. For the French, the Saar metropolis is called Saarbruck.
In 1920, Saarbrücken became the capital of the Saar region, which today forms the smallest German federal state by area. The state has its own public broadcaster, Saarländischer Rundfunk; major companies based here include CosmosDirekt, Halberg-Guss, Saint-Gobain Gussrohr, Saarstahl AG, Hager Electro and Leffer.
Notable buildings in Saarbrücken include Schloss Saarbrücken, the Alte Rathaus, Schloss Halberg, the Landtag des Saarlandes, the Deutschherrenkapelle and the Ludwigskirche, the city's landmark. The city is home to the Saarländisches Staatstheater and numerous contemporary, historical and regional museums.
For a exploratory walk through Saarbrücken, besides a stroll along the Saar, which meanders gently along the western edge of the old town, we recommend a trip into the casemates of the underground castle complex and a climb up the bell tower of the town hall, 55 m high, from where you can enjoy a lovely panoramic view of the charming hilly landscape on both sides of the German-French border.
Due to the proximity to France, where demand for prostitution is rigidly sanctioned (Swedish model), cross-border demand has caused the sex business to flourish in the state capital. A relatively large number of brothels have settled in Saarbrücken, and there is a notable street prostitution scene, a circumstance that has long been a thorn in the side of the Saarbrücken authorities.
Among Saarbrücken's well-known sons and daughters are Max Ophüls, Wolfgang Staudte, Peter Altmeier, Joachim Deckarm, Ingrid Peters, Ilona Christen, Fiona Erdmann, Jonas Hector, as well as the singers Sandra and Nicole.
