Niedersachsen:
Niedersachsen is, with around 47,600 sq km, one of the large territorial states in Germany. It borders the Netherlands to the west, the North Sea to the north, and encloses the state of Bremen; the lower reaches of the Elbe form a natural border with Schleswig-Holstein. Other neighbouring federal states are Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Thüringen, Hessen and Nordrhein-Westfalen. Around 7.8 million people live in Niedersachsen, of which roughly 520,000 live in the state capital Hannover.
In the Hannover area, largely dialect-free Hochdeutsch is spoken, which is why this region is regarded as the language area with the clearest German, even though linguists have exposed this myth as untrue. Hannover is known, among other things, as a major trade fair and congress centre, the home of the Norddeutscher Rundfunk, several universities, the automotive supplier Continental AG and the travel group TUI AG, the Herrenhauser Gärten, as well as a prominent transport hub with one of the most important and largest railway stations in Germany. Other larger towns in Niedersachsen are Braunschweig, Wolfsburg, Osnabrück, Oldenburg, Göttingen and Salzgitter. Industrial centres are mainly located in the Hannover-Braunschweig-Wolfsburg area, with the Volkswagen Group's car plants in Wolfsburg being of particular significance. Another relevant sector is the energy industry, especially in the field of wind energy. Beyond that, Niedersachsen is Germany's largest Bundeswehr location.
A particularly important economic sector in Niedersachsen is agriculture, both in livestock farming and in fruit and vegetable growing, as well as the agribusiness upstream and downstream of it in the value chain. Around three quarters of the state's area belongs to the North German Plain, with correspondingly extensive fields, pastures and forest landscapes. Nevertheless, Niedersachsen offers a variety of natural landscapes and different regions, such as the coastal region of Ostfriesland, the Emsland, the Oldenburger Münsterland, the Lüneburger Heide, the Osnabrücker Land, the Ammerland, the Weserbergland, as well as the Harz mountains, where the Wurmberg rises, believe it or not, to 971m above sea level as Niedersachsen's highest mountain.
In Niedersachsen you'll find many smaller towns with wonderfully preserved or restored old town centres and characteristic half-timbered houses, for example in Celle, Goslar, Hildesheim, Hannoversch-Münden or Hameln. As the town of the Pied Piper, Hameln also lies on the Deutsche Märchenstraße, a holiday route that links together stages of the lives of the Brüder Grimm as well as important places and landscapes from their fairy tales.
