What to expect at FKK Airport Holzwickede/Dortmund [RTC]

CURRENTLY CLOSED! In the RTC (Roter-Teppich-Club) group, the FKK clubs FKK Villa Romantika, FKK Villa Venus, FKK Villa Arabella, FKK Villa Verena, FKK Airport, FKK Freude 39, FKK Grimbergsauna, FKK Luderland and Dietzenbach have joined together into one cohesive chain of clubs, which sets itself apart from other sauna clubs through a simply kept wellness offering, an extremely favourable price structure with standardised rates and extras - where offered - at no extra charge, absolute FKK and a minimalistic web presence. The name "Roter-Teppich-Club" is a nod to the cliché-laden past of some tradition-rich Ruhrgebiet clubs, which with their bordello-style plush, the prevailing Gelsenkirchener Barock and at times kitschy, run-down décor right down to said red carpet have firmly etched themselves into the audience's memory. Apart from the Grimbergsauna, most RTC clubs offer, if anything, only a very modest outdoor area. A special position within the RTC group is held by Freude 39, which since its reopening in 2014 presents itself as the flagship of the chain and comes closest to matching the typical idea of a sauna club. The FKK Dietzenbach also holds a special geographical position, being located far from its sister clubs in Dietzenbach near Frankfurt.

The FKK Airport club near Dortmund is located in Holzwickede/Holzwickede.

The city of Dortmund lies on the north-eastern edge of the Ruhrgebiet and looks back on a history spanning over 1000 years. It has since become the largest city in the Ruhrgebiet, ahead of Essen and Duisburg. One of the most successful German football clubs - Borussia Dortmund - has its home here.

The Westphalian metropolis is a very popular cultural destination in NRW. With its museums, theatres, party locations and events, Dortmund offers a rich range of options with high leisure value, in which there's something for every taste.

Dortmund is very easily reached via motorways from all directions. From the north via the A1 and A43, from the east via the A44, from the south via the A45, and from the west, depending on exactly where you're coming from - via Köln/Düsseldorf or Duisburg/Essen - via various motorways. The metropolis is signposted on motorways for hundreds of kilometres from all directions before you even reach the city, so it's hard to miss.

Beyond that, Dortmund can be reached by train or via the centrally located Dortmund Airport 21, but also via nearby airports in the Ruhrgebiet or in NRW generally. With S-Bahn, U-Bahn, buses and trams, plus a well-developed Park & Ride system, every part of the city can be reached without any hassle.

On top of that, there are of course many sights to discover, such as the variety of Dortmund's buildings, which are often in complete architectural contradiction to one another. The cityscape is particularly shaped by the post-war style, yet the knowledgeable observer will notice many different buildings from various eras, which lend the hip Westphalian metropolis its unmistakable flair.

Among Dortmund's well-known sons and daughters are Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus, Wilhelm Overbeck, Gustav Mallinckrodt, Helene Wessel, Rudolf Platte, Arnold Marquis, Dettmar Cramer, Hans Tilkowski, Lothar Emmerich, Dieter Pfaff, Dietmar Bär, Annegret Richter, Jörg Thadeusz, Peter Thorwarth, Lars Ricken, Kevin Großkreutz and Marco Reus.

Holzwickede:

Holzwickede is a municipality within the Kreis Unna. It borders directly to the south of the Dortmund Airport site and can easily be reached by car via the Dortmund/Unna interchange on the A1/A44 motorways and the B1 feeder road. Holzwickede station lies on the Dortmund-Soest and Hagen-Hamm rail routes.

Holzwickede's development is closely tied to the industrial history of the Ruhrgebiet, and in particular to that of Dortmund. The place was already occupied by the Romans as a strategically important point between the Ruhr and the Lippe; according to legend, the Nibelungen followed the so-called Römerweg over the ridge of the neighbouring Ardeygebirge, and since the High Middle Ages a section of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela has also run through here.

The name of the district Opherdycke first appears around the year 1100 in documents of the Werden Abbey near Essen; in this district, the first coal finds are made in 1575. Holzwickede's mining history lasts until 31 May 1951, when the Zeche Caroline colliery is finally shut down. Since 2006, a residential area has been developing on the former colliery site, while a new commercial area is being developed near the airport.

The Emscherquellhof in Holzwickede is a former farmstead built around 1800. This is where the Emscher rises, which flows right across the Ruhrgebiet and joins the Rhine in Duisburg. Today the farmstead serves as a seminar and exhibition venue. Other destinations for excursions in the town, also known as a hiking paradise on the edge of the Ruhrtal, include the Hilgenbaum, Opherdycke moated castle, the Opherdycke churches, the Bachtal, the Schöne Flöte woodland area, the Oelpfad allotment gardens and the 130er memorial at the Kellerkopf.
