Ohrdruf near Gotha is a small town on the northern edge of the Thüringer Wald. The town of Gotha in Thüringen is known above all for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who felt a strong connection to Gotha, even though he lived in Weimar. Worth seeing are the old town of Gotha or, in Ohrdruf, the Schloss Ehrenstein and the town wall. Anyone wanting a somewhat deeper look into the towns of Ohrdruf/Gotha can take part in one of the interesting city tours. Gotha itself and the surrounding Thüringen countryside are rich in scenically and architecturally impressive excursion destinations.
In the late Middle Ages, Ohrdruf first came under the rule of the Wettins, and in 1348 it received town charter rights. Later it fell into the possession of the House of Sachsen-Weimar as a whole, and in 1657 into the sole possession of the Sachsen-Gotha line.
Anyone wanting to travel to Ohrdruf/Gotha in Thüringen has several options. By car you can reach the small town of Ohrdruf via the A4, exit Gotha, or via the A71, exit Gräfenroda. Unfortunately, travelling to Ohrdruf by train is no longer possible, since the operation of the Ohratalbahn was discontinued in 2011. However, residents and tourists in Ohrdruf/Gotha have the option of using the buses of the Regionale Verkehrsgemeinschaft Gotha, which cover the local transport area around Ohrdruf/Gotha very well and run at least hourly intervals between Gotha and Ohrdruf during the day. It should be noted that the individual bus lines stop at different points within Ohrdruf's compact town centre. Sensible boarding and alighting points are Ohrdruf Bahnhof, Bahnhofstraße Ohrdruf, A.-Schauder-Straße Ohrdruf, and Ohrdruf Kirche.
If you want to spend several days in Ohrdruf/Gotha, the Hotel im Gisselgrund or the Pension Waldesblick are especially recommended. You can dine excellently at the Pizzeria Picobello or the Waldgasthof Steigerhaus. Anyone who prefers something a bit more international is at the right address at Restaurant Korfu. Whether it's relaxation, culture or sport - Ohrdruf/Gotha in Thüringen has the right thing for everyone.
Near Ohrdruf was the Zwangsarbeitslager Ohrdruf, a satellite camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp, located on the grounds of a military training area built in 1908. In the town area today, a memorial stone and a stele commemorate the victims of the camp. During GDR times, the Soviet armed forces initially, and later also the GDR's NVA, used the area again as a military training ground. Since the beginning of December 2013, the site has only been a garrison training area for the Friedenstein-Kaserne in Gotha.
In Ohrdruf you'll find the rusk manufacturer Brandt as well as a factory of the confectionery maker Storck and a fulfilment centre of Hermes Fulfilment.
