"Am I already in Bavaria here?" asks the undiscerning stranger, who sets off from Hanau on the A3 motorway to the south and who, near Heidingsfeld, is met from afar by the Marienberg fortress, the landmark of the first big city on his way. "But of course!" every Würzburg citizen will shout with indignation and in the face of such an unqualified question shake his head without understanding. And indeed, the old pilgrimage town on the Main River, which for its part already makes a clear turn south near Hanau, lies far to the south of the Main line and thus far below the generally recognised great German-Bavarian divide, the so-called "Weißwurstäquator", which pushes Würzburg far into the traditional Bavarian region. Only hardcore Old Bavarians will express a different opinion.
It is a fact that the Celtic settlement of prehistoric times can look back on a proud Franconian history and was already a Franconian duke's seat in 604. At the Imperial Diet of Würzburg in 1168, the town became a prince-bishop's residence. The result of this history: Würzburg Residence, completed in 1781, according to UNESCO the most extraordinary of all baroque castles in one of Europe's most splendid princely courts, with the world's largest continuous ceiling fresco in its enormous staircase and the most complete rococo spatial work of art in its Mirror Hall in the Imperial Quarter. By the way, Balthasar Neumann played a decisive role in this magnificent building as well as in other Würzburg buildings. His portrait was still emblazoned on the 50-DM banknotes of the last series.
This does not mean that the city did not adorn itself with other proud buildings: in addition to the Marienberg fortress, there are the new church of the Old University, the Church of St. Mary, the baroque dockside crane Alte Kranen, the town hall with Grafeneckart, the pilgrimage church Käppele, the baroque summer residence Huttenschlösschen, the Marmelstein Court, the Women's Jail, the Old Main Bridge and the New University.
Würzburg is one of the most important and traditional university towns in Germany, where Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered X-rays named after him in 1895. The first Julius Maximilian University was founded in 1402, making it the oldest university in Bavaria and the fourth oldest in Germany.
However, the former Franconian duchy only became part of Bavaria in 1802. Under the Wittelsbach family, the town grew into a 100,000-population community by the beginning of the 20th century. Today it is the seat of the government of Lower Franconia. Würzburg is an important traffic junction in road and rail traffic and lies on one of the routes from the network of the Ways of St. James to Santiago de Compostela. For some decades now, the city has also been known as a European city with reference to the work of Hannsheinz Bauer.
Due to its special location, Würzburg is the centre of Franconian wine and at the same time a traditional brewery location. Würzburg is a vibrant and vital city between tradition and modernity, in whose Lusam Garden one can commemorate in silence Walther von der Vogelweide, Germany's best-known medieval minnesinger, who presumably died here in 1230; and whose student-rich young inhabitants - then again - give the city a pulsating life at the same time.
Among the well-known sons and daughters of Würzburg are Konrad von Würzburg, Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, Luitpold von Bayern, Hildegard Luise von Bayern, Heinrich Kiliani, Paul Panzer, Alfred Jodl, Matthias Grünewald, Carl Diem, Werner Heisenberg, Josef Neckermann, Otmar Issing, Leo Kirch, Jutta Ditfurth, Thomas Bach and Dirk Nowitzki.
