Feldkirchen in Carinthia is the fifth largest city in Carinthia. It lies northeast of Lake Ossiach in the Klagenfurt Basin, about 25 km northwest of Klagenfurt and 25 km northeast of Villach.
Feldkirchen itself is about 550 m above sea level. The municipal area lies between 510 m (lowest point at the municipal border to Ossiach in the Tiebel streambed) and 1,069 m (highest point, Taubenbühel at the Ossiach Tauern). The towns of the municipality are divided into 12 cadastral municipalities; the municipal area comprises 86 towns.
The area was inhabited around 200 B.C. by the Celtic kingdom of Noricum. The Romans occupied Noricum in 15 B.C. and subsequently expanded the previously primitive road system. For the Roman Feldkirchen it can be assumed that it was the street station Beliandrum. Shortly before 600 A.D. Slavic warrior nobility entered the country and founded the Principality of Carantania. Around the middle of the 8th century, a wave of Christianization began in Carantania, emanating from the diocese of Salzburg and aiming at the "conversion" of the Slavs. After the Benedictine monasteries Ossiach (before 1027) and Millstatt (around 1070) were founded, extensive estates in Carinthia were transferred to the church. The diocese of Bamberg, which was only founded in 1007 and had great influence in the region for centuries, was given special consideration. Today, the city of Bamberg is twinned with both the city of Feldkirchen and the city of Villach.
In the late Middle Ages, Feldkirchen developed more and more into a place that aspired to civic self-government. In 1441 the Habsburg King Friedrich III equated the citizens of Feldkirchen with those of the princely markets and towns in terms of trade and commerce. The bishop of Bamberg withdrew from Carinthia in 1675. After the revolutionary year of 1848, the law of 17 March 1849 created the conditions for the formation of political local communities. Feldkirchen was assigned to the district Klagenfurt-Land. The current Feldkirchen district has existed since 1 January 1982.
From Feldkirchen's long history there are still some buildings worth seeing, among them the parish church Maria im Dorn from the 11th century, the subsidiary church St. Michael, the Bamberg office court, Dietrichstein Castle, the castle ruins Prägrad, Lang Castle and Poitschach Castle.
Today Feldkirchen is the location of mainly small commercial enterprises. In view of its location in a traditional holiday region in the Alpine region, Feldkirchen is particularly attractive for tourists and in summer and winter is suitable for leisure time activities such as hiking, cycling tours and, of course, skiing holidays as part of a classic family holiday at the lakes of Ossiacher See and Wörther See.
