Flensburg is situated on the Baltic Sea at the beginning of the Flensburg Fjord and has a lot of sights to offer. The beginnings of the city are based on the foundation myth around the knight Fleno, for the 12th century first churches are proven on the city area. The entire area belonged to the Kingdom of Denmark at that time. After the decline of the Hanseatic League in the 16th century, Flensburg was regarded as one of the most important trading towns in Scandinavia, and in the 18th century it became an important trading centre for rum. After the German-Danish War (1864) the town came under Prussian domain, in 1920 Southern Schleswig together with Flensburg came to Germany after a referendum, while the northern part of Schleswig voted for Denmark. Today Flensburg is home to a Danish minority population; Danish is taught in general schools.
An important tourist factor of the city is the historical harbour with the fishing museum, the shipping museum and the rum museum. The old town, with its characteristic location on the waterfront, is well preserved and offers numerous churches as well as the Franciscan monastery, the 14th century North Gate, the landmark of the city, the North Market, the South Market and the Red Street, the Flensborghus, the basement vault Gnomenkeller, the Ship's Bridge, the West Indies Warehouse, the building complexes Margarethenhof and Burghof as well as the Oluf-Samson-Gang, the historic red light district of the city.
Flensburg's urban territory already has numerous protected landscape areas, parks, green spaces and beaches. In the city centre you will find a variety of theatres, cinemas, cafés and pubs, the city is a well-known venue for festivals, harbour events and regattas. Flensburg sees itself in particular as a city of border trade and tourism, but there are also numerous service and industrial companies located here. As a naval base, Flensburg was one of the most important garrison cities in Germany until the 1990s.
