With a population of almost 160,000, Darmstadt is the fourth largest city in the state of Hesse and is part of the Rhine-Main region. Thanks to the Technical University and other research institutions, the city was awarded the title "City of Science" in 1997.
How to get there by train:
Darmstadt's main railway station, which opened in 1912 and later became barrier-free, is the second largest railway station in Hesse after Frankfurt am Main and is therefore well integrated into the long-distance rail network of Deutsche Bahn. Several Intercity and Intercity Express lines connect the city directly with Karlsruhe, Berlin, Constance and other long-distance destinations. The trams and buses of the city's local public transport network can be reached via the high platform.
The approach by car:
At the Darmstadt motorway junction, the federal motorways A5 towards Kassel/Basel and A672 (Darmstadt feeder road) intersect.
Hotels: The hotels Maritim, Intercity, B&B, Ibis Darmstadt and Hotel Hornung are located close to the train station. Further 3 and 4 star hotels can be found in the city centre. Depending on which requirements a hotel should meet, it is worth taking a look at the relevant hotel rating portals.
Frankfurt Airport can be reached from Darmstadt via the A5 motorway in just a few minutes. At the same time, the A5 is a magnificent panoramic road in the Upper Rhine lowlands, offering a picturesque view of the elevations of the Messeler hill country and further south of the Near Odenwald low mountain range. The original holiday route in this area as well as the associated natural area are called Bergstrasse.
Economy:
The core sectors of Darmstadt's economic life are: the IT sector, chemistry/pharmaceuticals, mechanical engineering/mechatronics, hair cosmetics as well as space and satellite technology. The city's economy is characterised by its technology and research orientation. Since December 2, 2003, the element with the atomic number 110 in the chemical periodic table of the elements has been named Darmstadtium (D) in honor of the Darmstadt Society for Heavy Ion Research. Darmstadt is the only German city after which an element was named. Darmstadt is home to the chemical and pharmaceutical group Merck KGaA, the oldest chemical and pharmaceutical company in the world, Röhm GmbH, Carl Schenck AG, Wella, Döhler GmbH, Goldwell GmbH, Deutsche Telekom (t-online), Deutsche Post AG, Software AG, Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft and the Technology and Innovation Centre (TIZ) Darmstadt. Darmstadt also has an extensive publishing tradition.
Education:
Darmstadt is home to universities with a total of around 41,000 students. The most prominent of these is the Technical University of Darmstadt, founded in 1877, with around 26,000 students. With approximately 13,000 students resident in Darmstadt, the second largest university is the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. In addition to the two large Darmstadt universities, there is the Protestant University Darmstadt (EHD), founded in 1971 and sponsored by the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau, and the Academy of Sound Art, founded in 1851 as a private music school.
History:
A deeper understanding of the Hessian state structures is not possible without knowledge of the outstanding position Darmstadt held in Hesse for centuries. Only with the foundation of the federal state of Hesse after World War II did Darmstadt's political and administrative importance decline, as the larger city of Wiesbaden, which had very little destruction, was given preference as the state capital. Darmstadt is still the administrative district of 10 counties (Bergstrasse, Darmstadt-Dieburg, Groß-Gerau, Hochtaunuskreis, Main-Kinzig-Kreis, Main-Taunus-Kreis, Odenwaldkreis, Offenbach, Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis, Wetteraukreis), 4 independent towns (Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Offenbach am Main, Wiesbaden) and 3 special status towns (Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Hanau, Rüsselsheim am Main).
Darmstadt belonged around the year 1000 first to the so-called Wildbann Dreieich, came then in the year 1002 into the possession of the diocese Worms and 1009 into the possession of the diocese Bamberg, 1013 then finally it became a fief of the diocese Würzburg and remained it up to the "Reichsdeputationshauptschluss" 1803, the final completion of the Holy Roman Empire. In the middle of the 13th century, the Counts of Katzenelnbogen built a moated castle near Darmstadt; in 1330, Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian granted Count Wilhelm I of Katzenelnbogen city rights for Darmstadt.
With the associated market right the importance of the until then rather inconspicuous settlement grew rapidly and the entire economy in the surrounding area was directed to the Darmstadt market. In the course of the 14th and 15th centuries, the counts of Katzenelnbogen extended and rebuilt the castle again and again until it finally became a representative manor house in the middle of the 15th century. Darmstadt became a second residence to Katzenelnbogen and experienced a first peak of its development. In 1479 the family of the counts of Katzenelnbogen died out, Darmstadt fell to Heinrich III of Hesse. Darmstadt thus sank from an important secondary residence to a small outpost far away from Kassel, the centre of power in Hesse.
In 1567 Landgrave Philip the Magnanimous of Hesse, one of the most important sovereigns of his time, died and Hesse was divided among his four sons. Wilhelm received the northern part now called Hessen-Kassel, Ludwig received Hessen-Marburg, Philipp Hessen-Rheinfels and Georg the southern part now called Hessen-Darmstadt. As Landgrave George I (the Pious One) he then founded the Hessian side line Hessen-Darmstadt and turned the former outpost Darmstadt into a respectable royal seat. Since Philip and Ludwig died childless in 1583 and 1604 in each case, these territories fell to the Kassel and Darmstadt lines respectively.
The inheritance dispute that began in 1604 with Hesse-Kassel over the legacy of Hesse-Marburg, but above all the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War in 1618, hit Darmstadt hard and led the city through several crises. It was not until Ludwig VI in 1661 that not only a time of peace but also of economic upswing returned. About 100 years later, Ludwig IX, who took office as landgrave in 1768, ordered the city to take rigorous austerity measures. For Darmstadt, Ludwig IX's reign was a time of reforms and political insignificance, as he moved his seat of government to Pirmasens in the Palatinate. Ludwig's wife, Karoline von Hessen-Darmstadt, who, unlike her husband, often resided in Darmstadt, brought about Darmstadt's first cultural heyday. From 1771 she gathered the so-called "Circle of Sensitives" around her, which also included the young Goethe. He awarded her the honorary title of the Great Landgravine. Louis X took over the rule in 1790 and moved the seat of government back to Darmstadt.
With the Final Recess of the Imperial Deputation 1803 Hessen-Darmstadt gained large areas. In 1806 Landgrave Ludwig joined the Rhine Confederation and was appointed Grand Duke by Napoleon I. The Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt - not to be confused with the Electorate of Hesse (Hessen-Kassel or Kurhessen) - existed in its absolutist form from 1806 to 1819, after which it became a constitutional monarchy and lasted until 1919. Article 47 of the Vienna Congress Act of 1815/16 assigned further territories to the Grand Duchy of Hesse, including Worms, Alzey, Bingen and Mainz, an area known as Rhinehessen. The Grand Duchy of Hesse with its residence in Darmstadt experienced its maximum expansion during this time and dominated large parts of Hesse.
In 1815 the Grand Duchy joined the German Confederation and was its member state until 1866. With its territories located north of the Main, it belonged to the North German Confederation from 1867 to 1870 after the lost German War against Prussia (1866) and was a member state of the German Empire from 1871 to 1919. The once so important Hesse-Kassel, however, became the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau in 1868 and merged into the administrative district of Kassel, which had already been formed in 1867.
After the November Revolution of 1918, Darmstadt's last Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig had to abdicate. In 1919, Darmstadt became the capital of the newly founded state of Hesse with its republican constitution. During World War II, approximately 99% of Darmstadt's old and inner city was destroyed. After the occupation by the Americans in 1946, Darmstadt was no longer chosen as the state capital of the newly founded state of Hesse due to its desolate condition. The race was won by Wiesbaden, which had been a rather insignificant town until around 1800 and only became prominent in 1806 as the capital of the newly established Duchy of Nassau, which had existed until 1866 and was later incorporated into the newly created Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau by Prussia together with Kurhessen.
