Ohrdruf near Gotha is a small town on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest. The town of Gotha in Thuringia is best known for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was strongly attached to Gotha, although he lived in Weimar. Ohrdruf first came under Wettin rule in the late Middle Ages, and in 1348 it was granted town charter. Later it fell into the possession of the entire house Saxony-Weimar and 1657 into the exclusive possession of the line Saxony-Gotha.

Near Ohrdruf was the Ohrdruf forced labour camp, a branch of the Buchenwald concentration camp, on the grounds of the military training area built in 1908. Today, a memorial stone and a stele commemorate the victims of the camp in the city area. In GDR times, first the Soviet armed forces and later also the NVA of the GDR used the grounds again as a military training area. Since the beginning of December 2013, the site has only been a training area for the Friedenstein barracks in Gotha.
Ohrdruf is home to the rusk manufacturer Brandt as well as a factory of the confectionery manufacturer Storck and a dispatch centre of Hermes Fulfilment.
