The Rhine separates landscapes and regions. Moers borders directly on the districts of Duisburg on the left bank of the Rhine and is only about 10 km away from the roaring city centre of its big neighbour, but has largely retained its tranquil character, which is so typical of the many Lower Rhine towns between the Rhine and the Meuse. Through the motorways A57 in the west and the transversals A40 and A42, which form the interchange Moers and the interchange Kamp-Lintfort, the city is perfectly connected to the long-distance car traffic, especially to and from the Netherlands, with which Moers also has a special relationship, because in 1597 Moritz the Orange took over the city. Among the Dutch, the city flourished economically and remained largely protected from the destruction of the Thirty Years' War. It was not until 1702 that Moers fell to Prussia as a result of inheritance and became a principality in 1706.
The former medieval shire has a cosy pedestrian mile in the centre of the inner city, directly adjoined on the south side by the extensive castle park with the city's most famous building - Moers Castle - which was built in its first form around 1200. Moers is a compact city; outside the town centre there are commercial settlements, especially on the western and northern sides, which today form part of the townscape.
Until the year 1800, Moers was exclusively characterised by agricultural activity and craftsmanship; with the onset of industrialisation a flourishing textile industry initially developed here. At the beginning of the 20th century, however, Moers was dominated by mining. On the Rhenish Mining Route as part of the Route of Industrial Heritage you can find today the Pattberg mine, the Pattberg slagheap, the Rheinpreußen 4 mine, the Rheinpreußen 5/9 mine, the Eurotec Technology Park, the Rheinpreußen slagheap and the Meerbeck colony. Shaft IV of Rheinpreußen colliery was renovated after the plant was shut down in 1990 and is now a mining museum; the Eurotec Technology Park is located on the site of the former Rheinpreussen 5/9 colliery. With the last closure of the colliery in 2001, Moers bid farewell to the mining era; the cityscape today is characterised by a good mix of medium-sized companies.
In the cultural field, Moers has gained worldwide recognition among music lovers through the International New Jazz Festival Moers - now "moers festival". The multi-day festival has been taking place since 1972, mostly over the Whitsun days, and covers a broad spectrum of musical styles from free jazz and jazz rock to world music, soul, funk and hiphop. Until 2014, the usual venue was the palace park of the city. Since then, the festival has been held every year for four days in the new festival hall with a capacity for 2000 visitors at the Solimare location of the leisure organiser ENNI, which operates outdoor swimming pools and sports facilities in Moers and the surrounding area.
