Baden-Baden lies near the Baden Rhine river plain in the Oos valley at the foothills of the Black Forest, whose northwestern mountain peaks rise abruptly here and continue south as a mighty mountain range. The Black Forest High Road to Freudenstadt begins here and attracts countless excursionists and holidaymakers every year as a spectacular panoramic road. Baden-Baden is Germany's most prominent and world-famous health resort and, with its buildings and parks, follows in the footsteps of its long spa tradition.
The very name Baden means that the town has always had a bathing tradition since its Roman settlement. In 1046, the market right of the town was first mentioned, which developed into the capital of the margraviate of Baden, until Baden-Baden was burned down by French troops during the Palatine War of Succession on 24 August 1689; as a result, the residence was moved to Rastatt. Over the centuries, the double name Baden-Baden has established itself as a demarcation to other villages of the same name, and in 1931 it became official. The traditional use of the thermal springs in Baden led to the introduction of the spa tax in 1507 and to the consistent expansion of the spa operations. At the beginning of the 19th century, with the construction of the spa house, the casino and numerous luxury hotels, the town developed into a glamorous spa resort and Europe's summer capital, accommodating countless stately guests from the nobility and upper middle classes.
In view of the distinctive character of the city as a place of recreation, it is generally a pleasure to explore the cityscape with its numerous green spaces. Tourist attractions include the magnificent parks and gardens Lichtental Alley and Dahliengarten, the Gönner facility and the Mediterranean Florentine Hill with fantastic views over the spa and cultural city; furthermore the Caracella therme, the Friedrichsbad, the Villa Hamilton, the Paradies water art facility, the Lichtenthal Monastery, Hohenbaden Castle, the New Palace, the Brahmshaus, the Festspielhaus, the Trinkhalle Baden-Baden, the Kurhaus, the Casino, the Theater Baden-Baden, the National Kunsthalle, the Frieder Burda Museum, the Fabergé Museum, the Philharmonic Hall and churches such as the Collegiate Church and the Russian Church. Of course, in view of the directly adjacent mountain ranges, there are also numerous hiking opportunities on circular and theme trails in the Black Forest National Park.
The splendour of the Belle Epoque lives on in the city. Today more than ever, Baden-Baden is an elegant international spa and cultural city with a shopping mile and sophisticated air and the venue for numerous gala events and festivals. The Festspielhaus is Germany's largest concert and opera house and offers musical experiences, opera evenings and ballet performances with the resident orchestras of the Philharmonie Baden-Baden as well as the SWR Symphony Orchestra or guest orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker. The annual Herbert von Karajan Whitsun Festival also takes place in Baden-Baden.
