Iserlohn is a town in the Märkischen Kreis district in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located in South Westphalia in the south-eastern peripheral zone of the Ruhr area, about 25 km east of Hagen, and can be reached via the A46 motorway and a total of six railway stations within the city area.
The urban area extends over the Ruhr valley in the north to the heights of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge nature park in the south; directly south of the urban area is the Iserlohn Height, whose highest elevation is 545 m above sea level. The cityscape is thus characterised by considerable differences in altitude and a large forest stand.
In the Middle Ages, Iserlohn was under the influence of the archbishopric of Cologne. Worldly rulers included the Counts of Werl, the Dukes of Berg and the Counts of Altena, who divided their lands into the counties of Mark and Limburg at the beginning of the 13th century; today's Iserlohn was situated exactly at the border of the districts. In 1237 Iserlohn was granted the town charter by Count Adolf I. von der Mark. After the battle for succession between Jülich and Kleve (1609-1614) , the County of Mark was taken over by the Electorate of Brandenburg and since then belonged to Brandenburg-Prussia, the later Kingdom of Prussia.
As the name of the city suggests, Iserlohn has always been a centre of metal processing. Already in the Middle Ages, armaments and later wires and needles were produced in the town. Also products of the bronze and brass industry were among the important goods of the city. From the 18th century Iserlohn became the most important industrial city in Prussia. Today the city is home to a balanced mix of companies in the industrial and service sectors, with traditional metal processing still playing a major role.
Since the end of the 19th century in particular, the Iserlohn city area has been repeatedly changed. Since 1 January 1975, Iserlohn's current municipal structure has consisted of the city districts of Inner City, Wermingsen, Nußberg, Gerlingsen, Hombruch, Iserlohner Heide, Dröscheder Feld, Obergrüne, Sümmern, Hennen, Letmathe and Kesbern.
Iserlohn's landmark is the Danztower on the mountain Fröndenberg in the Iserlohn city forest. Also worth seeing is the St. Pankratius Church or Peasant Church, the oldest preserved building in the city dating from 985. Right next to the church is the House of Homeland from 1720, which today serves as a museum of local history for the city of Iserlohn. The Bismarck Tower stands on the Seilerkuppe Hill in the Seilerwald Forest near Hemer; it is a monument erected in honour of the former German Chancellor Otto Fürst von Bismarck. The old mansion Letmathe in the district of the same name, which was already mentioned around 1036, is nationally known. Unique in Germany is the German Cave Museum Iserlohn in the district Obergrüne; it is the largest German museum for speleology.
Iserlohn is considered the city of hockey. Iserlohn teams are represented in the highest German league in ice hockey, roller hockey and inline hockey.
The entrepreneurs Theodor Müllensiefen, Friedrich Soennecken and Hermann Diedrich Piepenstock were born in Iserlohn, as were the artists Wilhelm Wessel and Ernst Dossmann, the singer Sandy Wagner, the cabaret artist Jochen Busse and the astronaut Ulrich Walter.
